Bedroom Study Area

white and pine desk and wall cupboards

This is a study area created within a modestly-sized bedroom. The room has a south facing window so the desk position was chosen to ensure the afternoon sun didn't cause a problem for studying.

The wall cupboards are from IKEA's BESTÄ range, fitted with soft-close hinges and push-open openers so handles aren't required. The upper cabinet is 400 deep allowing storage of bulky things like sleeping bags. The lower cabinet is 200mm deep to ensure is doesn't crowd the desk. It has a LAXVIKEN textured white door which helps add interest to the otherwise plain styling.

The shelf below is cut from 200mm wide timberboard from Wickes, and supported on IKEA EKBY STÖDIS brackets. Finding suitably long panhead screws was difficult; the ones used are actually for corrugated roofing, without the sealing cap, as these were available in small quantities.

The desk is supported upon 2 IKEA MICKE drawer units, which provide storage for drawing and writing equipment as well as some hanging file space for school books and work. They are spaced to allow the office chair to fit comfortably. The black castors of the MICKE cabinets have been replaced with white doorstops acting as feet.

beautifully rounded corner of desk top

The desktop is cut from 600x28mm timberboard again from Wickes. It has been rounded and sanded and has had 3 coats of Ronseal matt interior varnish. The radiator was changed for a shorter finned one so it would fit beneath the desk.
